Pierre BROUTIN SANDSTONE QUARRIES ON THE SÉNART PLATEAU (SEINE-ET-MARNE) |
Abstract
The sandstone quarries of the Sénart plateau are long-forgotten but constitute nonetheless a significant element of the local substratum. The quarries have been revealed by recent archaeological excavation and the complete chain of operations for sandstone working, from extraction to finished product, has consequently been identified. Archival and cartographic studies have provided an understanding of the quarries’ origins. An excavation strategy has subsequently been devised which favours an open-area approach rather than excavation by section.
