ARCHEOLOGY OF MEROVINGIAN CEMETERIES IN THE ÎLE-DE-FRANCE
Directed by Cyrille LE FORESTIER
The Early Middle Ages, and more specifically the Merovingian period, are marked by changes in society which begin at the end of the Roman period. Whether influenced by political institutions, the economic system or religion, funerary practices evolve between the 4th and the 8th century. Within graves, the funerary structure, grave goods, the way death is envisaged and bone remains are relevant markers for understanding this transformation in society.
Designed as a collective research project and launched in 2014, "Archaeology of Merovingian cemeteries in the Ile-de-France" brought together numerous regional archaeologists until 2020. The research programme’s purpose was firstly to compile, within a Geographic Information System, spatial and attribute data from excavations carried out between the first half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 21st century, initially by local amateurs and latterly by archaeological contractors. A detailed inventory of 452 sites, published as a project report in 2016, has provided the basis for numerous regional funerary archaeology research projects.
The second purpose was to bring together contributions from specialists in early medieval funerary archaeology covering subjects as varied as the history of this field of research, the National Museum of Archaeology collections, the typology of funerary practices, epitaphs and gravestones, bone treatment, looting, copper alloy and pottery artefacts, paleopathology and paleo-demography. The publication includes 7 articles which look at particular funerary assemblages from Bonneuil-en-France, Frépillon, Saint-Pathus, Lagny, Noisy-le-Grand, Saint-Denis and Vicq, the majority recently excavated..
