THE EARLY NEOLITHIC IN THE LOWER MARNE VALLEY:
A small early Neolithic settlement, consisting of two houses, was excavated between 1996 and 1998 at Changis-sur-Marne "les Pétreaux" in the river Marne valley, in advance of gravel quarrying. Despite mediocre preservation, the site produced interesting information about the first farmers in the region. The finds from the pits include pottery, flint and bone artefacts, sandstone grinding tools and faunal remains. This material can be dated to the Paris Basin Final Bandkeramik, which on current evidence is the earliest Neolithic occupation in eastern Île-de-France.
