Ségolène DELAMARE OPUS VITTATUM AND OPUS MIXTUM IN LUTETIA AND ITS AREA: A Chronological and Spatial Approach

Abstract

The opus vittatum and opus mixtum are two Roman construction methods using small brickwork. While being popular in Gaul, the reasons for their diffusion, adaptation and evolution have so far never been the object of a specific study. This research seeks to determine their spatial distribution and their chronology in Lutetia and its area. In the region, they appear during the 1st century AD in which they are found both in rural, suburban, but more specifically in urban contexts. These types of constructions developed because they could be speedily built and easily adapted to local resources. From the 3rd century AD, their use becomes rarer to then gradually disappear during the 4th century AD.
