Abstract

Merovingian graves are renowned for having been frequently looted for centuries, the presence of grave-goods often being the reason why they are reopened. In the Île-de-France, the frequency of grave disturbance is significant and generally begins during the period of cemetery use. Archaeological evidence for ancient reopening is varied and detailed examination can very often lead to discussion of the disturbers’ profile and motivation. It would appear that frequency of looting varies considerably from one site to another, and in some cases is less than previous studies may have led us to believe.
