THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ARCHEOLOGY AND MEROVINGIAN ARCHEOLOGY

Abstract

When the National Museum of Archaeology was established, priority was given to Roman Gaul and Prehistory. A lack of financial and human resources led to the Merovingian collection being little known, its study made difficult by sheer volume, inadequate inventories and successive or erroneous relocation, as well as decisions made in ignorance of the collection and its potential. Development in research call for collaboration between curators, management and specialists in various fields. Old collections and recent excavations are mutually enlightening, as illustrated by the examples chosen for the present article.
