METAL ARTEFACTS FROM 12 ÎLE-DE-FRANCE CEMETERIES:
A first chronological typology

Abstract

The "Archaeology of Merovingian cemeteries in the Île-de-France" project included attempting a first chronological typology of metal grave-goods. Finds were assembled from twelve cemeteries dating from the 5th to the 7th centuries, all recently excavated barring three. In all, 841 artefacts were divided into four major categories: 228 weapons, 196 jewellery items (100 rings and 96 ear-rings), 149 brooches and 268 belt-buckles. The results of this test are dependant however on the occasionally fragmentary data available from excavations, sometimes comprising incomplete corpora and dating based on various typologies.
