Isabelle ABADIE CONSIDERATIONS ON MEROVINGIAN RELIGIOUS BUILDINGS IN ÎLE-DE-FRANCE: |
Abstract
The article focuses on early medieval places of worship in Île-de-France. The first part concerns a rare example of a Merovingian edifice excavated on the "Saint Rieul" site in Louvres (Val-d’Oise). The building, which contained three distinct phases of funerary occupation, generated a succession of churches and a vast parish cemetery lasting until the modern period. The second part of the article compares several Merovingian churches from the region. This double line of enquiry allows wider consideration of how the origins of settlements, burial sites and places of worship are related.
