POSSIBLE LINES OF RESEARCH FOR A HISTORY OF THE PERCEPTION
OF MEROVINGIAN BURIALS AND ARTEFACTS IN THE ÎLE-DE-FRANCE:

from the Ancien Régime to the present day

Abstract

Merovingian archaeology has advanced significantly in France over the last 50 years with recent studies and publications providing an accurate picture of the history and development of this field of research since the discovery of Childeric’s tomb in Tournai in 1653. The present article uses examples of archaeological finds, publications and anecdotes to provide an overview of two centuries of Merovingian archaeology in the Île-de-France, where the subject has never been specifically addressed until now.
