A MIDDLE NEOLITHIC 2 ENCLOSURE:
Méry-sur-Marne, "La Remise" (Seine-et-Marne)

Abstract

The excavations of the enclosure at Méry are not recent. Publication has allowed a total re-examination of the finds and animal bone remains. The monument comprises two continuous palisade trenches and a series of interrupted ditches forming a circuit which encloses an area estimated at just over 3,5 ha. Finds analysis indicates a common Michelsberg base substantially permeated by diverse influences from the northern Chasséen and the Noyen group. Six radiocarbon dates place occupation between 4226 BC and 3537 BC. Study of the Méry site provides a significant scientific contribution to understanding the role of enclosures in the territory’s organisation during the Neolithic period.
