Vincent GOUSTARD, Christian PIOZZOLI USING ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVALUATION IN THE STUDY OF A ROMAN SETTLEMENT: the Example of Saint-Chéron (Essonne)

Abstract

During the 19th century, roman ruins were discovered on the outskirts of the hamlet of Saint-Evroult at Saint-Chéron (Essonne). In 2008, an evaluation confirmed the existence of a Roman settlement. From around this period when legislation encouraged the building of more housing estates, the Regional Archaeology Service decided to inspect building permits for the area. Thirty archaeological evaluations carried out on small plots have renewed our knowledge of the area and have underlined the important role played by archaeological evaluation in this type of stratified context. It also highlights the investment both strategical and financial of these complex surveys in relation to the recent political decisions taken on land development.
