Gwénaël MERCÉ APPRAISING AND EXCAVATING FIRST WORLD WAR REMAINS IN THE ILE-DE-FRANCE REGION: |
Abstract
From 1914 to 1918, thousands of military structures were built, rebuilt and maintained as part of the entrenchment to protect Paris. The Ile-de-France landscape still contains many remains of these structures. Examination of thirty-odd excavation reports has enabled study of the entrenchment’s development and identification of the principal physical characteristics. Comparison of this data with archival material underlines the need to cross-check sources in order to improve analysis. The present article is drawn from a regional collaborative project dedicated to archaeological study of the construction of the Paris entrenchment.
