AN ATYPICAL FEATURE DATING TO THE RECENT NEOLITHIC:
an individual cremation from Mours "Le Derrière des Moulins" (Val-d’Oise)

Abstract

An original combustion feature (FR.7) was found in the northern part of a vast diachronic site at Mours "Le Derrière des Moulins" (Val-d’Oise). It contained 1860 g of human cremated bone in three distinct piles. The pyre and the cremated bone are located within the same feature, as the pyre was covered and protected once the cremation was over, after the fragments of cremated bone had been grouped together. The study of this feature has revealed codified actions that we have be able to decipher even though the feature is eroded and the radiocarbon date of a bone sample reveals that it belongs to a chronological period (3100-2903 BC cal / Lyon 11052- GrA), when the practice of cremation is still relatively rare.
