Juliette GRALL A PRELIMINARY SURVEY OF EARLY MEDIEVAL GRAVE-MARKING IN THE ILE-DE-FRANCE |
Abstract
The study of sites inventoried within the research programme dedicated to the archaeology of Merovingian cemeteries in the Ile-de-France enables a preliminary survey of early medieval grave-marking. Study of a practice intended to emphasise the grave is essential to an overall perception of early medieval burials. Detailed examination of the spatial organisation of graves allows identification of surface markers. A significant corpus of grave-stones is known for the region but other more ephemeral indicators have been identified which further clarify our image of the funerary landscape.
