Caroline CLAUDE TWO LATE-MEDIEVAL POTTERY ASSEMBLAGES FROM PARIS (1st ARRONDISSEMENT)

Abstract

In 2009, excavations in Paris, Rue de Rivoli, revealed two sunken features, a pit and a latrine, at the back of a plot occupied from the late Middle Ages by the Hôtel de Ponthieu. The structures contained pottery assemblages dating from the 14th and 15th centuries and comprising wares for food preparation (pans and basins), cooking (handled and tripod pots) and service at table (cups, jugs). Certain have fabrication defects, sometimes significant, indicating a pottery workshop close-by. Comparison of the two assemblages shows that one is still part of the medieval tradition despite a few innovations whilst the other contains a very different range of forms typical of the modern period.
