Alexy DUVAUT-ROBINE A 6th TO 12th CENTURY RURAL SETTLEMENT ON THE BORDERS |
Abstract
Field-walking on the route of the future TGV Nord-Picardie train-line in the late 1980’s had detected a 6th to 12th century settlement at Moussy-le-Neuf (Seine-et-Marne). Various developer-funded excavations carried out since indicate that the settlement covered at least 5 hectares. The difficulty however of reinterpreting data from the earliest excavations has so far prevented an over-all synthesis. Results from the 2009 "Barogne 8" excavation are presented here with the aim of demonstrating the general development of an agricultural and domestic settlement observed in two sectors covering 12000m² and 5000m². On a wider scale, this research has increased our knowledge of land occupation during the early medieval period on the borders of the “Pays de France” and "Goëlle" territories.
