Régis ISSENMANN, Ginette AUXIETTE, David BARDEL, Françoise TOULEMONDE HALLSTATT D2/D3 RURAL SETTLEMENTS AT VILLE-SAINT-JACQUES: "Le Bois d’Échalas" (Seine-et-Marne)

Abstract

The 2008 excavation of the site at Ville-Saint-Jacques "Le Bois d’Échalas" (77) has brought to light two successive settlements dating to the Late Hallstatt period. They are characterised by a series of post-holed buildings, storage and refuse pits that have provided objects and preserved vegetal remains rich in information. The pottery, probably thrown away following a fire, represents quite a complete set of domestic ware. Animal bone indicates the rearing of mainly sheep / goats and pigs.

Spatial analysis of the settlements shows areas empty of archaeological features suggesting the presence of constructions that have left little trace on the ground or courtyards. The presence of milling tools points to an area reserved for specialised activities.

The Ville-Saint-Jacques settlements integrate an ever growing corpus of Late Hallstatt sites in the Seine-Yonne confluence that participate in a structured socio-economic organisation of settlements on a micro-regional scale as proposed in recent studies.
