Stéphane ARDOUIN, Thierry GALMICHE, Djillali HADJOUIS, Laurence FLEURY EXTENSION AND CHRONOLOGY OF THE MEDIEVAL CEMETERY IN CRÉTEIL (VAL-DE-MARNE)

Abstract

A medieval cemetery that has been linked to the Saint Christophe church of Créteil was first discovered in the 18th century and then partly excavated in the 1990s. The first inhumations date to the 5th century. During the Merovingian period, the funerary zone spread over two sectors of the historical centre, around the 10th century church and 150 m to the south-east. Coffin burials and plaster or stone sarcophagi are attested from this period. The anthropological and pathological studies of 50 burials excavated to the south-west of the church in 1994-1995 reveal a long list of afflictions, malformations, pathologies and other abnormalities of the skeletal remains.
