Abstract

The "Port aux Pierres" site at Saint-Sauveur-lès-Bray is highly representative of small Gallo-roman rural settlements in the Bassée area of the mid-Seine valley. The site was established in the mid 1st century and probably abandoned in the decade from 270 to 280 AD. The most significant information concerns 3rd century occupation and is provided by data from constructions, pits and numerous artefacts which point to diversified activities: agricultural production, textile-working, possible fur-farming, antler-bone working, as well as hunting which appears to play an important role. On the outskirts of the settlement, a pit contained two summarily sculpted stelae and various artefacts (coins, fragments of bronze and amber objects) which can be attributed to a family shrine (lararium) destroyed just before the end of the 3rd century.
