LATE-MEROVINGIAN BURIALS AT DUGNY (SEINE-SAINT-DENIS)

Abstract

Two Bronze or Iron Age ring ditches were discovered during an archaeological evaluation at Dugny, "La Luzernière/La Comète", at the end of 1997 and during 1998. Four Merovingian burials, of which two contained ornaments, were also brought to light at the centre of one of the monuments. They are dated to the second half of 7th century AD or even to the end of the 7th-beginning of the 8th century AD. This small group, perhaps a family group, thus re-used these much earlier but important archaeological features, these tumuli that were probably still visible in the landscape at the time the burials took place. At present, these burials can not be related with any contemporany settlement.
