SAMPLING FOR PALAEOENVIRONMENTAL AND GEOARCHAEOLOGICAL ANALYSES:
Methods for Conservation, Sorting and Selection

Abstract

The present paper reviews conservation procedures applied to palaeoenvironmental and geo-archaeological samples from during archaeological excavations, taking into consideration their scientific and heritage interest. The question of their scientific interest is looked at more specifically in the light of discussion generated by the 2017 decree which defines procedures for the conservation, selection and study of archaeological material. The paper is a synthesis of discussion with various specialists in palaeoenvironmental studies. The work was carried out in the Ile-de-France regional archaeological office as part of curatorial training at the national institute for heritage.

USING ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVALUATION IN THE STUDY OF A ROMAN SETTLEMENT:
the Example of Saint-Chéron (Essonne)

Abstract

During the 19th century, roman ruins were discovered on the outskirts of the hamlet of Saint-Evroult at Saint-Chéron (Essonne). In 2008, an evaluation confirmed the existence of a Roman settlement. From around this period when legislation encouraged the building of more housing estates, the Regional Archaeology Service decided to inspect building permits for the area. Thirty archaeological evaluations carried out on small plots have renewed our knowledge of the area and have underlined the important role played by archaeological evaluation in this type of stratified context. It also highlights the investment both strategical and financial of these complex surveys in relation to the recent political decisions taken on land development.

USING LIDAR IN A LANDSCAPE STUDY:
the Forest of Fontainebleau (Seine-et-Marne and Essonne)

Abstract

From an archaeological perspective, the Fontainebleau forest area is known primarily for its numerous decorated rock-shelters, often dating from prehistory. Collaboration between the regional archaeological office and the national forestry office has allowed LIDAR aerial survey of this extensive forest. The purpose was to update the archaeological database in order to implement protective measures for sites affected by forestry activity. Following interpretation of the LIDAR data, field work was used to verify identified archaeological anomalies. Field-walking has consequently confirmed the existence of 167 sites dating from prehistory to the second World War. Knowledge of the area has been completely renewed, particularly for the Roman period for which the number of known sites has gone from 8 to 45: these are invariably related to land boundaries.

MEROVINGIAN POTTERY FROM THE YVELINES:
Épône and Septeuil, Two "Small Assemblages" from a Funerary Context

Abstract

The usefulness of re-opening and studying old collections is frequently questioned since data from such excavations is often incomplete or dispersed. In the present case, the research purpose was to re-establish the potential of Merovingian pottery material from cemetery contexts in the west of the Ile-de-France region. Two sites were chosen which had never been extensively studied: the "Les Culs Chevet"cemetery at Épône and the "La Pierre Bât" cemetery at Septeuil, both in use during the 6th and 7th centuries. The collections are curated by the Yvelines and Hauts-de-Seine inter-departmental archaeological service.

ADAPTING ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVALUATION AFTER TOP-SOIL REMOVAL:
the Roman Site of Servon (Seine-et-Marne), "Parc de la Roseraie"

Abstract

An archaeological evaluation that was ordered by the Regional Archaeology Service after an illegal development was carried out in 2015 at Sevron (Seine-et-Marne) over 6.5 ha. Most of the top soil had already been removed before the arrival of the archaeologists, which led to a campaign of field walking as well as the usual evaluation techniques of the opening up parallel trenches. A probable high status Roman settlement dating from the 1st to the 3rd century was discovered.
