STUDY OF AN ASSEMBLAGE OF 16th CENTURY POTTERY
FROM A DOMESTIC RUBBISH PIT IN IVRY-SUR-SEINE (VAL-DE-MARNE)

Abstract

This paper presents an assemblage of pottery found in a domestic pit dating from the 16th century at Ivry-sur-Seine (Val-de-Marne). The assemblage is a good illustration of the type of pottery in use in the settlements near the capital, in an area little documented for this period. Largely made up of Parisian culinary crockery (cooking pots with a handle known as "coquemars" and other cooking pots), the pit also contained other objects that testify different domestic uses such as an oil lamp with a bird table. An important quantity of tableware intended for beverages, composed of jugs, cups and gourds, made primarily out of Beauvaisis stoneware has also been found.
