A PRE- AND EARLY-ROMAN RURAL SETTLEMENT
WITH LATER MEROVINGIAN OCCUPATION AT MONTÉVRAIN
"LE CLOS ROSE" (SEINE-ET-MARNE)

Abstract

The excavation at Montévrain (Seine-et-Marne) "Le Clos Rose" has brought to light vestiges dating to the Late Bronze Age / Early Iron Age and to the beginning of the La Tène period. Pre-Roman structures including a building and several post-holed granaries within a quadrangular enclosure surrounded by a double ditch were also discovered. During the 1st-3rd century AD, the settlement is structured around buildings with stone foundations, wells, and hearths enclosed in a new series of ditches. The most recent settlement dates to the Merovingian period (7th-8th century). In conjunction with the study of pottery and animal bone, palaeoenvironment studies have also been undertaken.

TWO 3rd CENTURY FUNERARY (?) STRUCTURES AT ROISSY-EN-FRANCE
(VAL-D’OISE) AND CHAUCONIN-NEUFMONTIERS (SEINE-ET-MARNE)

Abstract

Excavation of two quadrangular structures at Roissy-en-France ("La Vignole", Val-d’Oise) and at Chauconin-Neufmontiers ("Le Bassinet", Seine-et-Marne), produced pottery assemblages unusual for rural settlement sites. Initial interpretation of the structures as cellars was subsequently questioned: although primary use for storage is certain, connection with cremation ritual is also to be considered. The present paper assembles all available excavation and finds-study data. Detailed examination provides numerous indicators for a funerary context in both cases, whilst underlining the difficulty with interpreting this type of structure.

CERGY "ZAC DES LINANDES" (VAL-D'OISE):
A Gallic Farm?

Abstract

Excavations carried out by the Val-d’Oise departmental archaeology service in the autumn of 2008 at Cergy ("ZAC des Linandes") revealed an extensive rural settlement dating to the Late La Tène period. The settlement comprised a system of enclosure ditches, associated buildings and numerous artefacts (pottery, bone, metal, cob, etc.) The present paper attempts to characterize occupation type and to identify different activities carried out on the site.

A LATE BRONZE AGE SWORD FROM "HAUTES PÂTURES"
AT NANTERRE (HAUTS-DE-SEINE) IN ITS REGIONAL CONTEXT

Abstract

A Late Bronze Age Atlantic sword of the "Parisian group" was discovered during an archaeological evaluation carried out by the Hauts-de-Seine Council. This paper relates its discovery in a "dry context" as well as commenting on its typological features. The analyses reveal that the sword was moved to a location at about 100 m from the present course of the Seine River at about a metre in depth after a long period of immersion. The Hautes Pâtures sword is part of a growing corpus of swords mainly from the Paris area, from contexts in the Seine valley. This discovery been the starting point of a new inventory of this type of weapon that has until recently been little published.

A NEW LOOK AT POST BELL-BEAKER
AND EARLY BRONZE AGE POTTERY FROM ÎLE-DE-FRANCE

Abstract

This paper is a synthesis of Early Bronze Age pottery in the Marne valley, part of an ongoing research programme entitled "From the Recent Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age: definition and interaction of cultural groups". It centres on establishing a typochronology of pottery production from the post Campaniforme period to the Middle Bronze Age. After the integration of data from new sites, the pottery corpus is presented using a sequence comparing different variables, method which is subsequently discussed. Post-Campaniforme pottery is seen to be grouped at the beginning of the sequence with radiocarbon dates around the turn of the second millennium BC. The next section of the sequence is divided into three categories: engraved motifs, horseshoe cordons and cord impressions, dating to the beginning of the second millennium BC. At this stage of our research is has not been able to establish if these three groups represent the Early Bronze Age pottery corpus or if they mark successive chronological stages.
