Didier BUSSON, Jean-Pierre GÉLY THE INTERSECTING DYNAMICS OF A SUBURBAN AREA AND A QUARRY SECTOR |
Abstract
Roman Lutetia and Medieval Paris required significant volumes of building stone. The city was advantaged by its highly favourable topography and geology, allowing quarries to be opened at its very gates. Over the centuries, the quarries entered into competition with agricultural activity and suburban development. Combining geological, archaeological and historical approaches, we can reconstruct the development of a quarry sector and its impact on a progressively urbanised area such as the village of Saint-Marcel (now the Les Gobelins district).
