EVIDENCE FOR MEROVINGIAN POTTERY PRODUCTION
IN THE JARDIN DE LUXEMBOURG (PARIS, 6th ARRONDISSEMENT)

Abstract

The Jardin de Luxembourg area in Paris has long been known for the presence of pottery working. Several Roman-period kilns have been recorded or excavated since the end of the 19th century. Latterly, study of collections from both old and more recent excavations has revealed over-fired or cracked Merovingian pottery shards, resembling kiln waste. Their presence makes continuity or renewal of this craft in the Early Medieval period hypothetically possible.
