THE CONTRIBUTION OF GEOTECHNICAL SURVEYS
TO UNDERSTANDING SUPERFICIAL DEPOSITS IN PARIS:

the examples of the Grand Palais and the Palais de Justice

Abstract

Geotechnical survey serves not only to explore and characterise a subsurface but also to understand and remedy the causes of structural disorder in a building. During work on the Grand Palais and the Palais de Justice, available geotechnical data were compared with those obtained from developer-led archaeological excavations. While the present study confirms known biases in terminology, it also underlines how shared research can benefit documentation of superficial deposits in Paris.
