BRONZE GAULISH COINAGE FROM ILE-DE-FRANCE
Overview of coin mintage and circulation

By Bruno FOUCRAY and Alain BULARD (†)

The bronzes minted by the Celtic tribes of the Ile-de-France region have not been the subject of a comprehensive study in spite of their importance for the Celtic economy. Many of the monetary types have so far remained of uncertain or erroneous attribution. However, this detailed overview of the new finds and older discoveries has provided material for a more precise cartography and identifications that are more assured. The book contains a commented catalogue of Parisii, Meldes, Carnutes and Sénons potins and bronzes in which data is cross-analysed using a metrological approach. A regional numismatic landscape emerges that is much more structured and coherent, from both a territorial and a chronological point of view. The distribution of coins on the smaller settlements demonstrates the essential economic role played by bronze coinage. Its iconographic, metrological and geographical interactions, as well as the identification of some of the workshops and overstriking and imitation practices, are all elements that contribute to its richness and complexity.
