EVIDENCE OF POPULAR DEVOTION IN THE EARLY MODERN PERIOD:
two religious symbols discovered at Châteaubleau (Seine-et-Marne)

Abstract

The 2019 excavation at Châteaubleau has identified circulation levels dating from the medieval and modern periods. They yielded a number of artefacts including two objects of a religious nature, a Saint Roch badge and a button-badge depicting the Holy Shroud. After a presentation of the archaeological context, this paper describes the badges, then places the discovery of the Shroud badge in a European context and reflects on the devotion to this relic between the Middle Ages and the Modern period. It concludes with an analysis of devotional practices to represented by the two badges.
