Paul CELLY, François RENEL WASTE PITS AND EVIDENCE FOR POTTERY PRODUCTION IN THE SAINT-ANTOINE INNER-SUBURB OF PARIS DURING THE 17th AND 18th CENTURIES

Abstract

From the second half of the 17th century until the beginning of the 18th century, the northern part of the plot at 45 rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine was occupied by substantial quarry-pits for sand and silt. Their back-fill was composed of detritus often containing significant pottery assemblages, comprising both domestic and production waste. Study of the latter has provided the first archaeological overview of pottery production in the Saint-Antoine suburb, known to have been the main area of earthen ware production in Paris at that period.
