THE ÉPIAIS-RHUS - VALLANGOUJARD ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE (VAL-D’OISE)
OR "THE ADVANTAGE OF INVISIBILITY"

IC FER GB  IC FER GB

Abstract

The Iron Age and Roman settlement at Epiais-Rhus – Vallangoujard was excavated from 1956 and backfilled in 1993 before complete exploration or publication of a final report. A project to reexamine the data took shape in 2019 and found active support from the two municipalities concerned. A working group was rapidly set up to publicize the project and involve the local population; a site visit being organised in October 2022. The public attended and feedback was very positive despite the absence of visible remains. Given the unexpected popularity of the archaeological site, we consider notions of materiality and memory, as well as the relationship between the public and archaeologists.
