ROADS AND TRACKWAYS IN THE SAINT GERMAIN-EN-LAYE FOREST:
a landscape archaeological study of the royal domain

Abstract

Excavation of the Saint-Sébastien fort at Achères (Yvelines) in 2011-2012 by Séverine Hurard (Inrap) included landscape archaeological research to document the location of Louis XIV’s training camp, built on the edge of the Saint-Germain Forest in one of the bends in the River Seine. Beyond questions concerning the siting of the military camp, set-up in a short space of time (1669-1670), planimetric analysis of the forest lay-out has shed new light on the development of the royal domain from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, as perceived through its road network.
