THE LA TÈNE SANCTUARY AT ABLIS (YVELINES):
Metal Finds Conservation from Excavation to Depot

Abstract

An exceptional weapons sanctuary dating to the Late Iron Age was brought to light during an archaeological evaluation carried out at Ablis (Yvelines) by Inrap in November 2013. The discovery led to a programmed excavation and a conservation program being put into place called "from excavation to exhibition" that guaranteed the preservation of iron objects from the excavation. This paper presents the preliminary results of this trial in terms of the recording of excavation data, the preservation of the metal objects, the study of the site and the morphological and stylistic analysis of the finds using new techniques (photogrammetry, industrial tomography, 3D microscopy, …). This collaboration also gave archaeology and conservation students the opportunity to learn more about conservation and the preservation of metals from archaeological contexts.
