THE ALLUVIUMS OF THE MAGDALENIAN SITE OF ETIOLLES (ESSONNE, FRANCE)
An Overview of Research on the Physical and Natural Context of Human Occupation at Etiolles

Abstract

This paper provides an overview of research on the alluviums of the Magdalenian site of Etiolles (Essonne, France). The data has been collected over the 40 years of excavation and research on the geological and natural contexts of the human occupation of the site. The importance of the alluviums resides in the date of the first deposits and the timescale of sedimentation. They also provide an insight into the evolution of the Seine valley and its chronological and climatic contexts from the Late Glacial period to the beginning of the Holocene. The stratified sequence of the alluviums at Etoilles serves as reference for the study of the evolution of river valleys of the centre of the Paris basin and the North-West of France notably for the Late Glacial period.
