Christian PIOZZOLI with the cooperation of Véronique PISSOT and Sylvain DUCHÊNE A PROBABLE GALLO-ROMAN BORDER SANCTUARY ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE CARNUTE, SENON AND PARISII TERRITORIES: The "Cave Sarrazine" site at Souzy-la-Briche (Essonne)

Abstract

Between 1865 and 1912 several polychrome mosaics from the Early Roman Empire were discovered at "la Cave Sarrazine" in Souzy-la-Briche (Essonne). They decorated a vast Gallo-Roman thermae the remains of which were identified in trenches as well as by aerial survey. A circular building (religious edifice?) as well as a hemispheric building (theatre?) complete this development that spans over 20 ha. It could be a Carnute sanctuary established from the 1st century AD, facing the cities of the Senones and Parisii, along a road linking the rich lands of the Beauce plateau to the Seine valley.
