RESERVOIRS AND CIVIL ENGINEERING ON THE LUTETIA AQUEDUCT

Abstract

The Lutetia aqueduct probably included numerous reservoirs and other civil engineering works. Spring waters from the Longboyau plateau were collected in a tank which was rediscovered in 1875 and 1903 between Rungis and Wissous. This particular structure’s function may have changed during its period of use. It was probably initially a settling tank which was later modified to become a collecting tank. Civil engineering works would have been necessary to enable the aqueduct to cross the Rungis stream. Other installations, such as a castellum within Lutetia or a conduit crossing the Seine, remain hypothetical.
