AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL TRENCH AT RODIN’S PROPERTY
IN MEUDON (HAUTS-DE-SEINE):

1951 or the Fall from Grace of Plaster Sculptures

Abstract

An evaluation trench carried out on the former property of Rodin in Meudon (Hauts-de-Seine) in 1994 has brought to light many plaster sculpture fragments from the master’s own production. They were broken up in 1951 at the request of the Rodin Museum. This destruction is an illustration of the fall from grace of plaster sculpture in the middle of the 20th century.
