WELL FRAMES AND WOOD-LINED WELLS
The Use of Wood in Well Construction in the Île-de-France
from the Iron Age to the Modern Period. Wood-analysis data

Abstract

Extensive development of the Sénart and Marne-la-Vallée areas over the last ten years has led to a significant increase in the number of archaeological excavations. Wells are a frequently found structure on excavated sites and often contain, in deep water-logged layers, wooden structural remains. The latter comprise two categories: wooden linings or timber bases for dry-stone shafts. Recently discovered examples catalogued here provide a regional picture for these structures (distribution, wood use and assembly techniques) which is compared with those of other regions.
