THE SOUTH GABLE OF THE GREAT HALL OF THE SAINT BERNARD COLLEGE
Urban Land-Fill, Building Sites and Pottery Production
on Paris’s Left Bank in the 13th Century

Abstract

Restoration of the Great Hall of the Saint Bernard College between 2003 and 2008 provided an opportunity for studying the process of sediment formation and the build-up of landfill deposit associated with the construction of this ecclesiastical complex on Paris’ Left Bank. Substantial back-fill layers, comprised of waste from pottery workshops contemporary with the Hall’s construction, demonstrate waste management in the urban context. Furthermore, these deposits provide the first direct evidence of a medieval pottery industry on the Left Bank of the Seine.
