EARLY MEDIEVAL GRAVE ARCHITECTURE
The Question of Burial Containers at "Saint-Pierre-du-Perray" (Essonne)

Abstract

Although few funerary sites are yet known in the Senart area, small burial groups are being found with increasing frequency. One of these contained thirty-odd graves, making it the largest group so far discovered in Senart. In the absence of other organic materials, taphonomical study of bone remains provides strong, but sometimes ambiguous, evidence enabling a reconstruction of grave architecture possibly using wood-linings within which individuals were buried. Evidence shows that certain skeletons are significantly dislocated or displaced, whilst others are completely articulated.
