THE END OF THE 4th MILLENIUM BC IN THE PARIS BASIN

THE RECENT NEOLITHIC BETWEEN THE RIVERS SEINE, OISE AND MARNE (3500-2900 BC)

Edited by Richard COTTIAUX and Laure SALANOVA

The "Seine-Oise-Marne" Neolithic cultural complex has not benefited from any new analysis since the work of Gerard Bailloud in 1974. Few assemblages from collective burials have been comprehensively studied, and many aspects of domestic life still remained to be documented.

This volume aims to overcome these lacunae, by presenting a series of thematic studies originating from the regions of Picardie, Ile-de-France and Champagne. These studies were undertaken in the framework of a Collective Research Programme (PCR) of the French Ministry of Culture between 2001 and 2008. We present here the latest achievements of this programme, drawing on recent research results which take into account all relevant aspects of material culture, including the diverse contexts, both domestic and funerary, in which they were found.

Ultimately, this volume proposes a synthetic picture of the recent Neolithic period in the Paris basin, during the second half of the 4th millennium BCE (-3500/-2900). The comparative study of the assembled data leads us to refine the chronological framework of the period into three stages. Moreover, the characteristics of the assemblages enable us to outline the development of three regional facies during the middle phase of the recent Neolithic.
